BENJAMIN – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced the beginning of a rehabilitation project in Knox County on US 82 will begin April 22. The $6.5 million project will take place on US 82 from SH 6 east to the FM 267 intersection.
Along with the project, which will include new asphalt concrete pavement, Stewart Street east to Church Street in Benjamin will undergo changes as well with new concrete pavement, curb and gutter, drainage structures, sidewalks and ADA ramps.
Contractor for the project, A.L. Helmcamp, Inc., has set a completion date of March of 2021.
The project will make significant improvements to this portion of US 82 and in Benjamin, according to Jared Groves, P.E., TxDOT Munday Assistant Area Engineer, who is overseeing the project. “We encourage the traveling public to use caution when traveling through the construction zone during the length of the project,” stated Groves.
Motorists traveling through the project will see lane shifts through Benjamin and extended lane closures on the roadway segment east of Benjamin with traffic reduced to one lane and traffic flow controlled by portable, timed traffic signals. “The lane closure will give work crews the space needed to safely perform the work,” Groves said. “Motorists are asked to drive with caution through the work zone, be on the lookout for workers and avoid distractions for their own safety and the safety of the workers.”
Motorists are reminded to follow posted speed limits and pay close attention to construction workers and equipment, as they are often in close proximity to passing vehicles. Be patient, take your time and remember traffic fines double in work zones.
