From The News-Courier staff—
MUNDAY—Munday paid its last respects on Monday to fifth-grader Lexi Collins, the daughter of Jara and Jacy Collins who died in an ATV accident last Friday in Benjamin.
Even in a time where social distancing had to be in place, hundreds gathered in and around Scruggs Field Monday afternoon for her funeral after told to come at their own risk and to self-quarantine themselves for 14 days afterwards.
Members of First Baptist, First United Methodist, Believers Chapel and St. Joseph’s prepared take-out meals for small groups of 10 or less prior to the services.
Only family members were allowed at the graveside.
A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night at Munday Elementary, also attracting hundreds of residents and their children.
A group that included Karen Longan, Kacy Latham along with Kandis and Cory Stephenson posted turquoise (Lexi’s favorite color) ribbons on lamp posts on Main Street and others added them around town.
Keep Munday Beautiful announced that plans were being made to have a statute of Lexi added at Centennial Park.
Anyone who would like to donate to this project can make out a check to Keep Munday Beautiful with Lexi in the memo and mail to Buds for You, 129 N. Birch, Munday, TX 76371.
