HASKELL—The Benjamin Mustangs, the No. 3 seed in District 16-1A, claimed the
ir first bi-district trophy in the five seasons under Coach Shannon Waters, scoring a 64-49 win over the Rotan Yellowhammers, runners up in District 15-1A, here Friday night at the Haskell High School gym
The Mustangs never led in the first quarter, but managed to tie the score at 16 as the final seconds ticked off the clock. That’s when they turned up the defensive pressure and forced a lot of turnovers that resulted in a 12-0 run to take control of the game, resulting in a 36-22 advantage at half. They maintained the double digit lead for all but one time the rest of the way.
“I was really happy with our defensive effort,” Waters said.
He also liked the balanced scoring effort where four players finished in double digits, Brody White 19, John Wolfforth 18, Mario Silva 15 and Del Everson 12. Waters also was happy with the way that the Mustangs reduced their number of turnovers.
“John really came up big tonight,” Waters said. “He played his heart out, his best game of the year.”
The Mustangs were eliminated in the area round, 47-31, by District 14-1A champion Westbrook Tuesday night. “They fought hard and left it all on the court,” Waters said.
