The football players at the three Knox County high schools report for the first day of workouts on Monday, getting their equipment to prepare for the new season starting later in the month.
There will be no contact allowed during the rest of the week as they will only be wearing their helmets during workouts. The first day for contact will be Saturday, Aug. 7. Scrimmages will follow the next two weeks before the teams kick off the season on Aug. 26 and 27.
Coach Caleb Callaway expects to have about 20 boys report and indicated they will be on the field from 7 a.m.-10 a.m. the first three days.
“Summer workouts have gone very well,” he added. “We’ve had some guys show up and really get a lot out of it. We look to see some good things from some our younger guys after graduating a large class last year.”
The Greyhounds will travel to Baird on Aug. 13 for a scrimmage with their host and Abilene Christian High School. Then they will host Hermleigh for a scrimmage on Aug. 20. To start the season, they will play on the road against the host school in the Jayton Gridiron Classic on opening night Aug. 26.
After kicking off the first day of practice last season with less than 10 boys, Coach Shannon Waters, entering his fourth year, is expecting 18 or 20 on Monday. The Mustangs didn’t lose anyone from the 2020 team that won its first district title in 32 years. Waters has high hopes the Mustangs can continue their winning ways.
The Mustangs will travel to Rotan for a scrimmage on Aug. 20 and then open the season at home on Aug. 27 against Moran.
Coach Justin Josselet will have plenty of returnees, nine on both sides of the ball, from last year’s team that finished the shortened season with a 1-6 record and he’s hopeful they can be more competitive this season.
The Moguls will host Ropes in a scrimmage at home Aug. 13 and travel to Wheeler the next week for another scrimmage before opening the season at Sweetwater against Iraan on Aug. 27.
