The football players at the three Knox County high schools spent the first week preparing for the football season wearing shorts and helmets for conditioning and other drills in cooler temperatures than usual for the first of August
They will get all of their gear and start contact work on Saturday.
Coach Caleb Callaway of Knox City had 20 boys show up Monday for the first day of practice. “We are really focused on conditioning through our drills,” he said. “We will also be working on our fundamentals on offense and defense. We know we have to be quicker than the teams we play due to lack of size, but we have a lot of talent on the field. We will continue to prep our guys with quality reps of offensive and defensive drills to make sure we are executing.”
Coach Justin Josselet of Munday had 22 players report on Monday and reported they would continue on the same 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. schedule for the week. “It went well,” he said of the first practice that was mostly running drills.
Coach Shannon Waters of Benjamin had 18 boys report. “We’re concentrating on conditioning, techniques and fundamentals along with putting in a few new wrinkles in our offense and defense,” he said.
Coaches will continue workouts next week in preparations for scrimmages before the teams kick off the season later in the month.
The Greyhounds will travel to Baird on Aug. 13 for a scrimmage with their host and Abilene Christian High School. Then they will host Hermleigh for a scrimmage on Aug. 20. To start the season, they will play on the road against the host school in the Jayton Gridiron Classic on opening night Aug. 26.
The Moguls will host Ropes in a scrimmage at home Aug. 13 and travel to Wheeler the next week for another scrimmage before opening the season at Sweetwater against Iraan on Aug. 27.
The Mustangs will travel to Rotan for a scrimmage on Aug. 20 and then open the season at home on Aug. 27 against Moran.
