1936–2026
Hiram Lee Whitaker, beloved husband, father and friend, passed quietly in his sleep on April 8, 2026 at the age of 89.
Born on July 18, 1936, in Fabens, Texas, Hiram was known by those close to him for his unwavering kindness, sharp wit, and dedication to his community. He spent much of his life in Knox City, Texas, where he built a life centered on family and agriculture.
A two-tour veteran of the Korean War, Hiram proudly served his country in the United States Army 4th Cavalry Division as a sharpshooter and heavy weapons expert.
Hiram is survived by his devoted wife, Shirlie Whitaker; his children, Chris and DeEtte Whitaker and Starla and R. T. Rush; and grandchildren, Jordan Whitaker, Connor Whitaker and Andrew Anderson, who will miss his presence dearly.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Gloria (Dodie) Simmons and Victoria (Vicki) Russell.
Hiram was a man of quiet strength, and his legacy lives on in the many lives he touched. Whether through a shared story or a helping hand, he left an indelible mark on his community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local Future Farmers of America or 4-H chapter in Hiram’s memory.
